1). Between The Buried And Me - "Colors II" :
BTBAM had some huge shoes to fill with a title like that and not only did they succeed, but they also proved their creativity and musicianship has only refined with the years by crafting an album that appeals to fans both old and new.
Truly an unstoppable creative force that understands their fanbase.
2). Vildhjarta - "måsstaden under vatten" :
The long awaited return of the originators of "thall".
This album is a sinuous, labyrinthic, dark odyssey that continues to surprise even after many listens. There really isn't anything else quite like it.
3). VOLA - "Witness" :
Amazing songwriting that finds perfect balance between the catchiness and accessibility of pop and the satisfying agression of djent with room left for experimentation.
4). Leprous - "Aphelion" :
Perhaps the softest Leprous album so far but also the most grandiose and majestic; "Aphelion" feels like a more uplifting and triumphant record compared to the brooding and desperate "Pitfalls".
5). Sleep Token - "This Place Will Become Your Tomb" :
Progressive more in terms of how it blends genres that usually wouldn't mix to create a unique and distinctive sound; TPWBYT has some pacing issues but is both moving and compelling.
6). Genghis Tron - "Dream Weapon" :
An incredibly soothing and hypnotising listen that feels like drifting through a synthetic dream; very enjoyable and unique!
7). Mastodon - "Hushed and Grim" :
A beautiful eulogical epic that has various mood and sound shifts; a solid new addition to Mastodon's legacy.
8). Kilpréz - "Patron Saint of Lost Causes" :
A mind-boggling mix of mathcore, prog and death metal reminescent of early BTBAM. Incredibly strong debut and inspiring musicianship from this one-man band.
9). Boss Keloid - "Family the Smiling Thrush" :
Interesting mix of sludge and 70's classic prog elements; booming and fun!
10). Wheel - "Resident Human" :
Tool comparisons aside, this album easily pulls you in but can fall a bit flat here and there. Although when it hits, it has some very catchy and memorable moments!
