Taking it easy for now with my favourite "non-heavy" albums of the year for lack of better words
1.) The Dear Hunter - Antimai :
The Dear Hunter had started to slip away from being part of my favourites post-Act V, but the vision, scope and incredible musicianship and sound production of Antimai has reverted that effect. TDH remain unparalleled in what they do.
2.) Fontaines D.C. - Skinty Fia :
Perhaps my favourite output from the Dublin bais so far with a more refined sound and a love/hate letter to the current state of the Irish country that resonated with me.
3.) The Smile - A Light For Attracting Attention :
Aight so quick disclaimer; I've never really listened to Radiohead, but the first time I heard "Pana-Vision" pop-up during the Peaky Blinders finale I was immediately pulled in by what was going on musically (even more than what was happening on-screen) and needed to find out more. Really great songwriting all over this one.
4.) I Built The Sky - The Quiet Place Away :
I Built The Sky trades shreddy prog metal for detailed accoustic and orchestral compositions and the result is genuinely heartwarming.
5.) Elephant Gym - Dreams :
The musicianship on this is absolutely bewildering; equal parts technical and poppy, this is some exquisite math-rock.
6.) The Mars Volta - The Mars Volta :
An unexpected return; although underwhelming in the grand scheme of this legendary band's discography, the album's grooves and psychedelic, latin surf-rock vibes eventually grows on you.
7.) Vinyl Williams - Cosmopolis :
Nostalgia and kitsch meet with futurism on this easy-going psychedelic ride that will have you bobbing along before you know it.
8.) Tears for Fears - The Tipping Point :
Didn't expect much out of this ; turns out Tears For Fears have still got it and this album is full of iconic catchy tracks to prove it.
9.) Just Mustard - Heart Under : Grungy, gloomy, cold and post-punky ; what's not to like?
10.) Heilung - Drif : Starts out strong but looses itself in its own vastness.
Still a good addition to the unique world of Heilung but perhaps not the most well fleshed out.
