Almost scrapped this one since I felt a bit silly doing just a top 5 but these albums deserve their highlight. Grindcore is another sub-genre I'm not super big on (hence the lack of picks) but all of these records blew my face off this year :
1.) Knoll - Metempiric :
Fuck me is this album heavy and nasty as hell; full of booming, screeching, scorching sounds and dissonance, Metempiric makes you want to rip out your flesh and bang your head against the walls.
2.) Wormrot - Hiss :
Goated (literally) band right here. It's not often that you get a grindcore album that carries a sense of conceptuality in the way it is built and the adventurous experimentation with piercing violins brings it to a whole other level.
3.) Vermin Womb - Retaliation :
This one was a bit of a last minute addition but the sheer amount of heinous, boiling bile this album spits at the face of listeners could not be ignored.
Straight to the point and incredibly vicious, this is a masterclass of unbridled agression in extreme music.
4.) Cloud Rat - Threshold :
A really refreshing spin on grind deep-rooted in hardcore and doom with some super punchy sound production and angular drum as well as guitar performances, very nice.
5.) Misery Index - Complete Control :
I guess this one might be more in the realms of death than grind but to my ears at least, Complete Control perfectly blurred the line between these two sub-genres. The production had a bit too much high-end for my taste but everything else on this record more than makes up for it.
