So we did a little thing with fellow music reviewer @cube_rat where each of us would pick a recent album we'd never heard of and we'd both review the two albums.

This is Part 1 and "Memory Palace" was my pick so let's get into it!

Right, so "Memory Palace" to me is a really solid example of what current underground mathcore acts are capable of.

There's been so many great releases in this sub-genre over the past couple of years that keep on pioneering the sound which some would have thought should have run out of breath by now, and this release is a piece within the wider puzzle that shapes a massive middle finger in regards to that statement.

The way I see it, this album could be seen as a showcase of everything good mathcore bands have been doing in recent years.

If some of The God Awful Truth's influences are quite appearant through their Dillinger and Car Bomb inspired guitar work and "Hell Songs" era Daughters vocal delivery style, that doesn't mean the band doesn't have it's own distinct personality and god knows this record is filled with it.

The only thing that kind of bothers my brain are the drums for some reason.

They kind of feel like they sit slightly apart from the rest of the mix and have this "live" sound to them which is both really cool and suits the band's explosive, high energy performance but also slightly confuses me since they sound slightly different from the way the rest of the band sounds.

Aside from that, "Memory Palace" will figure among what I thought were the best albums in the genre this year without a doubt.
