I had been meaning to check out fromjoy's music for quite a while now ever since I had been hearing about the release of their debut album "it lingers" which came out last year and featured Connor Sweeney (ex-Loathe) on production duties.

Their most recent output, "away" ended up being my introduction to the band and upon first listen I was immediately convinced.

"away" is a project that mainly focuses on the band's incorporation of various electronic sub-genres such as drum&bass, breakcore, ambient and even vaporwave within their spin on metalcore and hardcore music.

As someone who used to listen to a lot of these styles of music, especially breakcore, this EP spoke to me right from the get-go.

However, the real treat is the EP's closing track "daedalus" which is where the full band joins in to make the worlds of metalcore/hardcore collide and intertwine with the project's electronic DNA, resulting in one of the most gripping and creative hardcore tracks I've heard lately, perhaps even this year as a whole.

Between the warm melody of the harmonised clean vocals that dance around with the electronic breakbeats and the raw power and emotion of the harsher elements of this track, which even features a kind of thall-inspired bridge right before a face-melting, unhinged hardcore breakdown; there really are a multitude of very different things all happening at once here.

Yet, kind of like a Rubik's cube, all these different textures, colours and facets all come together to create a cohesive ensemble and an incredibly unique sound that has this odd, digital fever dream-like quality to it while also pulsating with infectious energy.

As soon as I was done listening, I went back to check out the band's previous output and I can now say that I'm really excited for what these guys have in store for us in the future and I look forward to hearing them rip apart any preconceived notions of hardcore music once more with their creative experimentation.

fromjoy are adding their contribution to the redifining of what can be considered hardcore or metalcore music, which is something bands like Vein and Loathe had already begun, and if you're a fan of those bands, you should definitely add these guys to your listening rotation.
