Fit For An Autopsy - "Oh, What The Future Holds"

Genre : Deathcore, Groove metal

Released : January 14th, 2022

Label : Nuclear Blast Records

FFO : Thy Art Is Murder, Gojira, The Acacia Strain

Fit For An Autopsy have always made their outlook on the state of the world and human behaviour quite clear through their music : bleak, harsh and hopeless.

Is it any wonder then that the follow-up to 2019's pre-covid "The Sea of Tragic Beasts" should be even darker and desperate? Certainly not.

However, musically speaking "Oh What the Future Holds" feels like a nice continuation of its predecessor that does offer new stylistical elements, albeit sparsely, giving this new record of theirs a slightly different mood but a sound that is not alienatingly different.

The crushing riffs and pummeling drums hit with the intensity you would expect from FFAA and Will Putney's production style is able to capture the raw grit and power emanating from the performances on this new album.

The melodic elements have also been kept to great effect (even though "Far From Heaven" sounds a bit too similar to Gojira for my comfort, as cool as it sounds) however the focus here rather seems to be placed on sheer heaviness rather than creating gritty melodical contrasts with heaviness as the centerpiece.

The major thing that could be reproached to "Oh What the Future Holds" is perhaps its lack of diversity.

However, what it does, it does extremely well, making it a solid deathcore album to kickstart the new year!
