"Underperformer" is probably one of the bleakest hardcore records you will hear this year both sonically and lyrically.
Tackling themes of self-deprecation, depression, inadequacy and nihilism, EYES give an incredibly raw and chaotic performance on "Underperformer" that is simultaneously hypnotising, empowering and anxiety-inducing.
While this album mainly sticks to the genre of chaotic hardcore which has seen an increase in popularity in recent years, it sometimes borders on blackened hardcore and more technical mathcore.
The thing I like the most about this album is definitely the guitar work.
The riffs and the tones fuel this album's aggression and the raw, gritty vocals perfectly exist within the mayhem they create.
I wasn't a big fan of the vocals at first but the more I listened to the record, the less I could think of a vocal style or delivery that would better suit the songs since they have a both very energetic but also somehow "apathetic" monotonous feel to them at times which perfectly suits the album's atmosphere and theme.
Overall, this album is exploding with genuine raw emotion and energy and I fucking love that sort of thing and would definitely recommend it to anyone who feels the same when it comes to music.
