This album was sent to me by staff over at Drongo Records and was a last-minute entry right before I closed off the May releases I wanted to check out and boy, I'm glad this one didn't get left out!
With a name like "Eat Your Own Head" I was expecting some kind of weird black metal or grindcore, instead, this turned out to be so much more than I could have anticipated.
Eat Your Own Head tap into a wide array of different styles that all find common ground within rock music, making "Neck-Deep in the Blyth" a rich, varied and extremely entertaining listen due to the sometimes unexpected turns the songs take as well as multi-dimensional nature of the album.
Combining the catchiness of alt rock with the whimsical, angular technicality of math-rock and the moodiness of prog metal, Eat Your Own Head add to that some well-placed bursts of incisive noise rock and post-hardcore along with riffs and massive guitar tones that could easily belong on a sludge metal record in order to complete a very elaborate sonic picture.
Both the songwriting and production are immaculate and Eat Your Own Head have got riffs for fucking days; "Neck-Deep in the Blyth" definitely has a lot of replay value.
Cannot recommend this record enough.
Once again, the UK underground displays how much of a fertile ground it is for fresh sounding and innovative alternative rock bands!
