This little split cover EP, featuring UK bands Conjurer and Palm Reader, both signed to HolyRoar Records (who have been putting out some of the most interesting heavy releases this year with the likes of Ithaca, Car Bomb, Employed To Serve..) came as a nice end of year surprise when it was announced and I must say I am delighted with the result.
The song choices are quite clever since they both fit with the band's respective styles and present the listener with some of the influences the bands have drawn upon to create their own signature sound.
Conjurer's cover of Mastodon's "Blood and Thunder" made me realise how much some of the harmonic riffs that can be found in their last album «Mire» nodded back to Mastodon's earlier work.
Their cover of Slipknot's "Vermilion" is absolutely massive, and for a second they had me thinking they'd managed to get Corey Taylor to sing on the clean parts; absolutely class.
Then comes in the second half of the split with Palm Reader's cover of "Tire Me" originally by Rage Against the Machine, which is an absolute belter and perfectly suits the band's style since RATM's metal-infused hip hop translates wonderfully into the band's high-energy brand of post-hardcore.
Finally, Palm Reader close out this EP with a cover of Thrice's track "Circles", showcasing the dreamier, shoegazy side of their sound and giving this fun little release a beautiful sendoff.
All in all a great release showcasing two bands infusing some classic heavy tunes with their own flair of modern heavy music and proving once again that HolyRoar's roster of artists is nothing but pure talent and creativity.
