How fitting that I should be talking about an album that deals with heartbreak and recovering from the emotional trauma of a past relationship on Valentine's Day.

Although this is perhaps the most common lyrical theme ever in music as a whole, Vernon Jane approach it in a very visceral, intimate, brutally blunt and honest way on their debut record.

The album is already sonically very intense, existing somewhere between punk and noise rock while adding a fusion jazz touch to it, but the very personal nature of the lyrics ramp up the intensity even further.

The vocal delivery is very unique, flexible, packed with emotion and personality while the rhythm section is incredibly good ("Float" showcases that perfectly).

The drumming in particular kept standing out for me and the bass sounds massive throughout.

The guitar parts are really fun and dynamic (I especially enjoyed the more math-rock influenced parts) and the saxophone really adds a lot to the atmosphere of some of the tracks.

I'm really glad I caught on to this album and band since it could have easily flown under my radar.

Their sound is really creative and fun in spite of the heavy subject matter and the energy on this is infectious, it would definitely be a cool experience to hear them live (here's hoping sooner than later).
